Free Yoga classes at UMD Griggs Field for Grandma's Marathon weekend!
For Two People Who Love Running, We Sure Do Complain About It
We’ve been attempting to run Grandma’s Half Marathon in Duluth, MN together since 2015. Back then, we didn’t have Garmin watches tracking every statistic we now obsess over. We didn’t have water backpacks. We just ran 10+ miles like camels, or if we were ambitious, planted water bottles along our route in advance. We didn’t have “pace goals” or “fuel” or “a training plan.”
throwback to the 2015 half marathon!
Running has changed quite a bit in the past decade!
But this tradition? We cherish this tradition for so many reasons.
Our motley crew has grown in number.
This year, nine women will gather at my house, put tattoo freckles on our faces, put fancy braids in our hair, write out things we’re thankful for on our arms in sharpie, take a photo of our running outfits and bibs, walk to the start line together, and celebrate finishing with an annual potluck and dips in the lake or the river to ice our aching muscles.
Last year I didn’t make a sign-up for the potluck. I just said, “bring something you crave eating after running”.
We ended up with about 20 bags of chips and one crock pot of mac n cheese. I’m not kidding!
It was hilarious. This year, Bryana is organizing a spreadsheet, very on brand for her.
So when UMD asked if we wanted to collaborate for Grandma’s weekend we were a little unsure. We are not extremely fast runners. But, after thinking about it, we agreed that we are some of the most enthusiastic individuals about Grandma’s that we know. And you know we are enthusiastic about the benefits of yoga and training. We love teaching for this specific benefit!
We love to dread long runs.
We love to discuss our aches and pains.
We love to laugh at mishaps that happen on our runs.
We love to learn ways to improve our running form.
We love to combine running and yoga.
We love the person who jumps on a trampoline in a costume.
We love the house that puts out hundreds of trolls.
We love the live music on London road.
We love the hilarious homemade signs.
We even love the insanely twisty, turny, brutal last mile.
We love the tradition of challenging ourselves physically and mentally once a year, and then returning to more diverse activities like paddling, biking, swimming, yoga, and hiking.
And so, we are THRILLED to announce our partnership with University of Minnesota, Duluth and RSOP to host two free yoga classes on Grandma’s weekend! This class is free for runners and the community.
Whether you are running, cheering, or you simply live in the area and want to join the energy of a large group of humans practicing yoga on the UMD football field… We would LOVE to say hi to you!
